Anatomy of a Dental Implant

Unlike traditional tooth replacements, dental implants are made up of three unique components. Each of these parts plays an important role in restoring your smile.

Crown
The crown is the artificial tooth that will help restore the appearance of your smile. Made of porcelain, each crown is custom made to blend in with neighboring teeth., Once in place, your new crown leaves your smile looking and functioning as naturally.

Abutment
The abutment is a connective piece that allows your crown to sit securely above the gum line. This piece is critical in that it stabilizes your crown, allowing it to function just like the rest of your natural teeth.

Fixture
The fixture is a titanium screw attached directly to your jawbone through the outpatient placement procedure. During the healing process known as osseointegration, this component becomes part of your smile. Ultimately the fixture functions just like a tooth root, to prevent jaw shrinking and other consequences of missing teeth.
